You can look at standard code for an example. Open the CustAgingReportController class. Look at the preRunModifyContract method.
Hi Dominic, where does it specify what design to be selected based on parameter of contract?
Check out the method \Classes\CustAgingReportController\getReportName() which is getting called from the preRunModifyContract method as mentioned by Dominic.

In addition to what Rachit said, the preRunModifyContract method is the hook to change to a different report design based on user input parameters from the dialog before the report is run. Whether to do it in the same method or put the logic in a seperate method is up to you to decide.
