Master Plan, recomended actions and planned production periods

Hi!

The recomended actions (Action- column) in Master Plan and Net Requirements covers a time period that is far to long. Is it possible to have F&O to not recomend to combine productions to meet demands that are too far apart?

Example:
  • We have a firmed production of 30 each of an item for today (day 0).
  • There is a sales order of 30 each for the same item in 6 days.
  • There is also a another sales order for 70 that is due in 40 days, and...
  • Master Plan has generated a planned production order of 70 each with delievery date 37 (i guess it calculates 40 minus production time).
  • Run time for the route is 0.3.
F&O's recomended action is to cancel the planned production order of 70, and increase the initial production of 30 so that we produce 100 now.

Is there a way to reduce the time period that F&O tries to combine productions like this? We do not want to combine these, as they are too far apart.

One alternative is to change the time fence of Action messages. In this case we would have to change it to <37, but this severly limits the usefulness of the Action messages. It would make much more sense if the system did not recommend Increase+Cancel outside of a set period.

How do I solve this? Right now, the Action gives too much noise to be useful.

Best regards, F

I agree, it would seem like a solution. But I can't get it to work. Below is a real life example.

The Planned production order marked in yellow is pegged to the Sales order also marked in yellow. The Coverage Group's general settings look like this:

The Coverage Period of 5 days should solve this, but F&O wants me to cancel the production and increase the intial scheduled production, although the Planned production order is way outside the 5-day period.

    What am I not understanding?

    Good day,

I believe this should be possible by using the 'Coverage period' setting. This setting allows you to combine the demand within a specific period—such as the upcoming 20 days—into a single planned order.

It is very strange that Microsoft has not thought about this issue.

What approach are the production planners taking to manage this?

    Hi,

This is what i believe is standard F&O logic trying to optimize by reducing future setups, but it can definitely lead to over-consolidation. There's no direct setting to restrict action suggestions like Increase+Cancel based on distance between demands, but here are couple of ideas:

Firm the planned orders earlier to prevent them from being re-planned.

Consider using coverage groups with shorter action time fences where combining far-out demand isn’t desirable.

Setting the time fence too short limits visibility, so a targeted approach per item or group usually works better than a blanket change.

    Hope this helps!
